A Trip To Freiburg

A trip to Freiburg | www.hannahemilylane.com

I mentioned in my last weekly catch up post that I went on a trip to Freiburg for the weekend but I thought I'd write up a little post as I had the most amazing time and also managed to fill 7GB worth of memory cards with photos and videos so I should share them with you! I can't even upload them onto my laptop because I've ran out of memory so they're just gathering dust on my external hard drive...

I had such a nice weekend. Whenever Tom and I go away with Rob and Naomi it's literally always torrential rain or thunderstorms predicted, and usually the forecast holds true. When we saw the weather forecasts for Freiburg we just rolled our eyes and packed our waterproofs, so we were a bit surprised when we ended up getting burnt in 30 degrees blue skies weather!!

The last time I went to Freiburg it rained. It was so nice to see the city in the sun!

We worked Friday, had a meal in Frankfurt and then caught the ICE train and arrived late Friday night, fortunately our hotel was right next to the train station as we were all quite tired.  We got up early Saturday to make the most of the day.

Breakfast was first on the agenda. We headed straight for the town where we found lots of little cafes bordering the stunning, towering cathedral and sprawling into the square, with a bustling market and a mountainous backdrop.

While sitting outside Sam's Cafe eating the most amazing brunch and enjoying the view, the sun started to come out and we made a plan for the day.

Freiburg is located in the Black Forest and the little city used to have a castle on a hill overlooking it. We caught the Schlossbahn (funicular railway) up halfway and then walked all the way up to the viewing platform at the top. Only to find it was shut. Though we still had some beautiful views of the city and we saw some ruins of the castle. We walked down and round and found another little viewing area which also offered stunning views of the city and surrounding hills and forest. We stopped for some wine and ice-cream before making our way back down.

We spent a lot of time just walking around the Altstadt and eating yet more ice-cream. The buildings are beautiful, medieval-looking and the cobbled streets are lined with bächle (little streams, a bit like drains but with clean water haha) which add character.

We got out of the sun for a bit in the much cooler cathedral. It was a little piece of calm in the middle of the city and is absolutely beautiful.

Afterwards we thought a drink on a roof top bar might be a good idea because it's getting to 2-3pm and you know, shade is obviously not needed haha. I'm blaming this for my sunburn, but it was such a nice bar and I love seeing the city from above.

It was still gloriously warm and sunny so we checked out the guide book to see what else we could do outside and discovered a little lake not too far away. So we hopped on the tram (thanks Intercity Hotel for the travel passes!) and headed to Seepark. When we discovered Pedal Boats I nearly jumped up and down in excitement and Tom let out a rather audible sigh. We have a bit of a history with pedal boats. But the boys said they'd pedal so Naomi and I could chill and snap some photos.

After a relaxing trip around the lake (well for us girls, anyways!) we stopped for a drink and some food to keep us going until dinner. Then we headed back to the hotel to get freshened up, share a bottle of wine and decide on somewhere to eat.

The place we wanted to go for dinner was fully booked so we ended up in a little restaurant which was nice and quiet, before heading to a crowded and loud Irish pub to watch the Champions League final/drink Mojitos. I'm not a massive football fan though I don't mind watching it in a pub or something when there's a really good atmosphere! The forecasted storms arrived while we were in the pub so we managed to avoid those pretty well too!

On Sunday, it was slightly more overcast but definitely not cold, and we ended up with yet another amazing breakfast, this time from Cafe Aspekt. Germany/Europe just know how to brunch. We explored a little more, stopped for some Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (because, of course) and coffee, visited the Museum for Stadtgeschichte , and had another glass of wine. (Disclaimer: weekend was NOT sponsored by wine and ice cream, views and opinions are all my own).

After a slightly stressed departure (read: already late bus delayed even further, getting cancelled, changed to a later one, decided to get refund, buy last minute train tickets, forget luggage was still at hotel, break the 100m sprint world record going to fetch it and catch the train with milliseconds to spare) we were on our way back to Frankfurt, thoroughly wined, dined and tanned.

Have you ever visited the Black Forest in Germany? Or have you got any weekend trips planned?
