Blogging Tips - Bad Advice

Blogging tips - Worst blogging advice
Not all advice is good advice. That doesn't mean you shouldn't listen to it, but you definitely should take it with a pinch of salt.

I've read SO much blogging advice and countless blogging tips posts, but I don't always do what they tell you to do (ooooh). What works for someone and someone else's blog may not work for yours. And also outright copying someone's blog is never going to end well either. So rather than repeat the same advice over and over again (it's been done to death a little, just do a quick search on blogging tips on Pinterest and you'll see what I mean) I thought I'd do the opposite, and tell you some of the worst advice I've either been given or read elsewhere.

Year Abroad - 2 Months Left

Year Abroad Blog Post | www.hannahemilylane.com
I haven’t written a year abroad update in what seems like forever, so this post is a little overdue. You can read all my older updates here, in case you missed them!

I don’t know how many times I say this, but my year abroad has absolutely flown by. It’s got to the point where I’m not saying how long I’ve been here but how many months I have left - which is only 2!! It’s just gone so quick and all I keep thinking is ‘have I made the most of this?’.

In case you haven’t read my previous posts and want a quick update on what I’m doing on my year abroad, I studied for one semester in Mannheim University, then moved in with Tom in Frankfurt at Christmas to start a work placement at a marketing company.

Here's what's been going on since my last update:

25 relaxing ways to de-stress

25 Relaxing Ways To Destress | www.hannahemilylane.com
I've been quite stressed recently, even though I don't have exams this exam season! As well as working full time, I've been piling the stress on myself by taking on other projects as well as working on my blog and my own projects. I'm terrible at switching off, absolutely terrible. I'm blaming it on my Type A personality.

But I am learning. I know which ways work for me when it comes to much needed relaxation, and I feel so refreshed when I come back to my never-ending to do list. I just need to allow myself relax more often.

I've actually been reading a book recently that explains how our brains work the way they do, why we get stressed, what effects this has on us and what we can do about it. It's so eye opening. But kind of scary because OH MY GOD stress is detrimental.

We all need time to switch off and let ourselves get distracted from our work, for the sake of our physical and mental health, so here's a list of some good ways to do just that:

Blogging: Organisation Tips

IMG_2147

I posted not so long ago about my blogging process and also my post schedule on Twitter in a chat and I received so many comments saying how organised it all was. I am obsessed with being organised so this didn't come as too much of a surprise for me, but it inspired me to write a post specifically on how to be more organised when it comes to blogging. So here we are, tips on how to keep your blog organised.

There's so much to do when it comes to blogging, that it can be hard to keep track of it all. Before I started blogging, I didn't realise how much effort goes in to running a blog. Well, running a blog if you actually want it to be read. There's the actual process of writing of the post, taking photos, seo optimisation, formatting and so on, which takes up 20% of the time, and then promoting your blog makes up maybe another 60-70%, and then the designing, website maintenance, replying to emails and all the other background blogging stuff that makes up the rest of the time. It's hard work, and there's so much to keep a track of that it's so easy to become disorganised with it.

I'm not saying you need to be organised to be successful, but it can surely only help (and save you time!). Here are my top tips for organising your blog:

How To Stay Focused

How to stay focused | www.hannahemilylane.com - A student lifestyle blog
Staying focused is half the battle with revision. I know what it's like: you sit down with your textbooks, notes and some highlighters, and it goes really well for the first 10 minutes, and then bam, motivation gone. The phone's out, you've clicked on Facebook, and now you've got distracted.

I probably shouldn’t mention this, but YAY I HAVE NO EXAMS. For the first exam season in like 7 years, I am free of exams.

Next year though is my final year, so don't worry, I'll be revising twice as hard next year.

It's not easy to stay focused on revision, but there are definitely ways you can help.

Bullet Journal: 50 Page Ideas

Bullet Journal - 50 Page Ideas | www.hannahemilylane.com
Bullet Journal - 50 Page Ideas | www.hannahemilylane.com - A student lifestyle blog
The thing I love most about bullet journalling is the freedom to add any page you like, wherever you like and the fact it's not  simply just a weekly planner.

I'm a bit obsessed with mine.

I haven't been bullet journalling too long, so I'm restraining myself from going too overboard with it. If I let myself I would have filled it a week in! It's best not to overcomplicate your bullet journal so it is still practical. A balance between functional and fun is ideal. Primarily, my bullet journal is a daily planner, but it's all the other pages and lists that have made me fall in love with it.

If you want to liven up your bullet journal, or you're just not sure what you could include, here are some ideas:

7 Things only British people who've lived abroad will understand

7 Things only British people who've lived abroad will understand | www.hannahemilylane.com
It's officially been over 8 months since I moved to Germany. Since then, I've completed a semester at a university, worked 3 months in my internship, lived in 2 different cities and visited 16 others (I just counted and I'm quite suprised at that!). It's been a challenging half a year, but it's been an amazing experience too.

I've had a few people requesting more posts on my life abroad, and I'm more than happy to oblige. The thing is that right now, my life probably isn't as exciting as you might think it is. That's what working a full time, 9-6, Monday-Friday job does to you. I will post another update soon (you can read my old updates here) as I've recently visited Mainz and Wiesbaden, been back to England and I have a few things to talk about, but really, my life has been quite quiet. That's what less time and expensive rent does *sad face*.

So for today's post, I thought I'd talk about some of the things that I've learned or experienced since I've been living out of the UK. If you've ever lived abroad, I'm sure you will relate to some of these, and even if you haven't, you might find it quite amusing to see what happens when you're taken out of the British isles for a period of time.

Blogging Tips: Things every blog needs (and doesn't need!)

Things Every Blog Needs (And Doesn't!) | www.hannahemilylane.com

For my second Blogging Tips series post (see the first here) I'm going to talk about what every blog should have and also about the things it doesn't need!

I mentioned in my first post that for me blog design is really important. I love finding a blog that not only has good content, but also LOOKS good and is easy on the eye, but also easy to navigate and find what I want.

There are certain things I always look for in a blog that I find important. These are the things that make me want to stick around, besides content that has me hooked. Because even if your content is amazing, I'm still going to feel negative if these things aren't present.

Sunday: 5 Things

Sunday 5 Things | www.hannahemilylane.com
April has been a pretty good month so far! And we're only just a week in.

My last 5 Things post went down pretty well, and I've been meaning to do another one, but one of the things I kept wanting to put into the list was a secret and then some weeks I was like "do I even have 5 things to talk about?" Haha.

But some exciting things have happened this week so I'm going to fill you all in.

Bullet Journal Update

How I use my bullet journal 1 month on | www.hannahemilylane.com - A student lifestyle blog
Bullet journal update | www.hannahemilylane.com
Bullet journals seem to be taking the blogging community by a bit of a storm.

And yep, I am sooo on this trend. Anything stationery or organisation related, count me in. I'm addicted to using my bullet journal, and it's always on my desk, whether at work or home. I love the whole concept of it and the fact I can just completely personalise it.

So because you all enjoyed my first post on my bullet journal, I thought I'd share an update with you, to show you how I'm using it and what pages I've included.

If you're still not sure what a bullet journal is, it's worth taking a look at the guy who founded the idea's site, as it is all explained so simply!

Blogging Tips: Starting a Blog

Starting a blog - everything you need to get going + free printable | www.hannahemilylane.com
Guide: Starting A Blog | www.hannahemilylane.com
I’ve been considering it for a while, and I’ve finally decided to start a new series on my blog, offering tips and guides for blogging, coding, social media and design. I was umming and ahhing as I’m by no means an expert on this. I’ve been blogging since 2013, and coding is still fairly new to me, but I do get quite a few questions and I’ve definitely got a few tricks I've picked up that I’d like to share with you.

So I know that a fairly large part of my audience are fellow bloggers, I’m also aware that some aren’t, and some of these tips may be useful to some of you newbie bloggers too. It also seemed like a fairly good place to start, you know, at the beginning.

So you want to start a blog? But… how?

There is SO much to learn about blogging, I’m still learning, but you don’t need to know it all to start a blog. I certainly didn’t, but there are definitely a few things worth knowing before you click publish the first time. Hopefully this guide will tell you all you need to know about getting started.

Feeling homesick

Feeling Homesick on a Year Abroad
Before I even typed the first word, I knew this post was going to be super difficult for me to write. I am really, really bad at opening up to people when something is up, and I haven’t even talked to anyone about this to be honest. So, this post could be a bit raw and a bit word vomitty, but bare with me.

As I write this, I’ve just woken up at my boyfriend’s house in Surrey. We flew back to England last night for a weekend to see his family. It’s 7am and everyone is still asleep but this would be around the time I normally wake up in Germany so here I am. I did try to go back to sleep but I was mentally writing this post in my head and I thought I might as well put pen to page (or fingers to keyboard?).
