A Guide For Improving Blog Photos

A Guide For Improving Blog Photos | www.hannahemilylane.com
Taking photos is my favourite part of doing a blog post. I've always been into photography and I love that blogging gives me an excuse to constantly snap away. I think my photography has come a long way as well since I first started my blog, though admittedly, I was taking photos on my iPhone and now I take them on my old, trusty DSLR.

The photos and graphics are so important on your blog to bring in readers. If someone is scrolling down their Twitter feed, they are most likely to be attracted to a quality photo and then pause to look and read the words. It's definitely still possible to get traffic to your blog without attractive photos and/or graphics, especially if you're writing vey informative and quality posts, but with people's attention span shrinking, the single best way to grab someone's attention is with a photo. Though, the writing is what will encourage them to read on and stick around.

Here are my top tips for achieving better blog photos:

My Year Abroad In Pictures

My Year Abroad In Pictures | www.hannahemilylane.com

I thought a fun way to sum up my year abroad would be to show some pictures. I have taken SO many photos since I started my year abroad so this was a really difficult task haha. There's soooo many more I wanted to include, but I ended up just picking my favourites. Hopefully one day I'll have some time to sit down and make a scrapbook but I don't see that happening anytime soon with final year coming up, so this is the next best thing...

I'm so sad my year abroad has come to an end, even though I am currently travelling around Europe, it's such an experience to actually be living in a different country and I have grown to love Germany. It'll always be a special place to me now, and if the UK goes tits up because of Brexit, then hopefully they'll accept me back!

How I Use My Bullet Journal For Blogging

How I Use My Bullet Journal For Blogging | www.hannahemilylane.com

I mentioned in this post on my bullet journal setup that I use the second half of my bujo to keep organised with my blog, and that I'd post again soon with a walkthrough of that. And here I am, a little later than planned, sharing my setup for my blogging bujo with you all.

I just wanted to place a little warning in that this half of my bullet journal is not as nice looking as my first half. I try to focus on the practicality of it and it's quite nice not having to worry about fancy lettering or banners or illustrations in this section. It's also a part I've not really shared on my blog before and wasn't planning on it so sorry for all that!

An Update

I just wanted to do a quick post to keep you all updated. I'm off interrailing around Europe for a month today. When this post goes live I'll actually (well, hopefully!) be sitting on the plane to Amsterdam. You can read about our full route here.

I have data abroad and most of our hostels have free wifi so I will still be on Twitter and can reply to blog comments. Posts are scheduled too so that my blog doesn't gather dust while I'm away from my laptop!

I'm also going to try post daily on my Instagram while I'm making my way across Europe, so if you don't already and want to follow along my journey, you can follow me here

See you on the other side guys!

3 Summer Formal Outfits

Summer Formal Outfits | www.hannahemilylane.com
I love an excuse to dress up or order a new dress. It had been so long since I last did a haul so I went a little crazy when I found out I needed a couple of formal dresses. I ordered loads as being 5'1" and small, I never know what will look right on me, but I ended up liking almost everything which made it super difficult to send things back!

These are the three dresses/outfits I liked the most though. I wore the second dress for Ed's (my boyfriend's twin brother) graduation and the first outfit for my birthday, and I got lots of compliments on both which was lovely, but they are beautiful! I'm keeping the third dress as I just love it and I may wear it to another upcoming event.

The Best Ways Of Saving Money When You're Travelling

The Best Ways Of Saving Money When You're Travelling
Travelling doesn't have to drain your bank account.

I'm by no means rich, I'm living on a student budget and trying to save as much as I can for next year when my student loan won't even cover my rent (thanks very much Leamington housing market and Student Loans Company...) but I still love to travel as much as I can.

Having been based in Germany certainly helped to keep the costs down, but now I've moved back to the UK I will definitely be using some of these tips I've picked up for my next trips away so I can still afford to travel.

The Journey From Dark Brown To Blonde Balayage Hair

Bleach London Beach Lights Balayage Kit Review | www.hannahemilylane.com
A while ago on Twitter, I stated that I was going to dye my hair blonde for summer. Though I had white blonde hair as a child, it became darker as I got older and it's almost always been a dark colour since I first dyed it at 13. I'm not even totally sure what my natural hair colour is.

But just as a little background, I dyed my hair dark brown this time last year, then for a festival I bleached the ends blonde and put lots of different semi-permanent colours in like a dip dye. The pinks and purples faded quickly leaving only a turquoise blue which ended up fading to a green, while the dark brown on top faded to a lighter brown. I struggled to get rid of this green as it had completely stained my hair, and resorted to dying over it again with a dark brown. This worked for a couple of washes but soon started to reveal the green again. A couple of months later I dyed it dark again, and this solved the problem.

As a small disclaimer, I would just like to say at this point I am absolutely no expert in hair colouring or really, anything to do with hair. All hair reacts differently to dyes and I can't say that results I have achieved would be exactly the same as someone else's. I do a lot of research before messing around with my hair but I am not trained, qualified or anything like that, and all my knowledge has come from the internet or my own experience.

21

My birthday has totally crept up on me this year. I usually get so excited about it and I love that my birthday is always an excuse for a summer BBQ and get together with all the family but this year, I've hardly thought about it.

I've had a whirlwind few weeks with finishing work and my year abroad, seeing Coldplay, flying back to England, catching up with Tom's family, Ed's graduation and finally getting the train back last night.

I love my birthday but I hate getting older. I know anyone older than me reading this will probably be like "you're 21, you're not even old", but time is going SO quickly and I'm really happy with where my life is now. This time next year, I will have finished university and be out there in the real world.

Though I had a perfect childhood, I never really enjoyed the teenage years of my life. I struggled a lot and among other personal things, I had a toxic group of friends and certain people (both students and teachers) made me dread going to school. I didn't have the best attendance even though I loved learning. I still love learning and I don't feel like I'm ready to stop studying next year.

Tips For Working Full Time And Blogging

I've just finished interning at a marketing company and working full-time hours. I'm so enjoying these lay-ins, and I'm also looking forward to having more time to focus on my blog. Working and blogging is doable, but there's no getting around the fact that it's tough.

I'll admit, I found the first couple of weeks difficult and I didn't blog at all. With any new job, there is a lot to learn, but this was also in my not very strong second language and I had long commutes. I was exhausted. But I fell into a routine quite quickly and after 2 weeks I decided I did want to carry on blogging, though I told myself I wouldn't push myself and only post what I could manage.

But then this is me we're talking about. A bad habit of mine is pushing myself too much, but let's not get started on that one. Anyway, I decided I wasn't happy with my blog and if I wanted to get my blog to where I wanted it to be I would have to put more effort in. Except I had less time to do that.

Blogging and working full time is all about time management. Here are some tips how I helped to manage to grow my blog alongside working a full-time job:

Back In England

www.hannahemilylane.com

I’m writing this post while cruising at 30,000ft up on my (very delayed) flight back to London, which signifies the end of my year abroad. I feel like 'time has absolutely flown' has been my catchphrase the last few months but seriously, time, will you slow down a little bit? Thx.

10.5 months ago, I was sitting on a plane feeling a little bit sick with excitement and nerves, and now I’m feeling a little bit deflated. I’ve missed England and I’ve missed my family, but I also know I’m going to miss this country that I’ve grown to love.

I’ve blogged a lot about my time in Germany and I wanted to do a final update of my last bit of time I’ve spent here. It’s been super busy. I’m so exhausted and I can’t wait for a lay in tomorrow morning. And some English food. I’ve missed English food a lot.

My last update post was 2 months ago, though I’ve been doing a few weekly update posts, I’ll fill you in from there!
