September - Goals for the rest of 2019

Purple Heather | Hannah Emily Lane

Even though I’ve been out of education for two years now, there’s something about September that feels like a fresh start, like the start of a new year. It’s not, obviously, but it definitely encourages me to take a look at my goals and think ahead to how I want the last few months of the year to go.

I’m definitely a summer person, so I’m sad that the evenings are going to be drawing in and the days getting cooler, but actually I’m not mad about the season change. I’m even a little bit excited for big scarves, pumpkin-spiced everything (so basic, I know) and the autumnal colours to paint the countryside.

Here are my goals for the rest of 2019:

Learn more Spanish

Ever since I left university, I’ve wanted to learn a third language. But I took a while deciding which one and, after more than 10 years of studying German, the prospect of starting from the absolute beginning with another language was daunting. I finally chose Spanish, having learnt a bit many, many years ago. However I very quickly realised I remember nothing, zilch, gar nichts, nada!

I did remember I still can’t roll my Rs though.

I’ve been using Duolingo everyday for the last 2 or 3 weeks and it’s really got me in the swing of it - I now feel excited and reminded of why I love learning a language, rather than anxious about not knowing the very basics. I’ve also started a language journal which is fun and I definitely should have started one when I first started learning German - top tip for language learners out there.

So one of my goals for the rest of 2019 is to keep it up! :)

find a riding coach

I’m really keen to start getting some lessons on my horse before the end of the year so we can step up the training a bit. After our recent first dressage show, which actually went really well, I feel even more motivated to find a coach who can help us progress. I’m not sure how quick the process of finding someone will be as you just don’t really know they’re teaching style until you’re being taught and I really want to find someone who understands my horse and I and that we can gel with. I’m going to start taking my search more seriously though - make a list of recommendations and actually get contacting people!

Be more organised

I feel like my life is definitely not as organised as it should be at the moment.

I know the main reason for this is I’m splitting my time between Suffolk and Warwickshire which means I’m travelling a lot. I couldn’t tell you where I will be in a months time, because I don’t plan more than about a week ahead at the moment! I don’t even know where I’m going to be this weekend….

One of my goals is to plan further in advance. I want to set out the weekends I will be in Suffolk and when I won’t so I can make better plans and make it a bit easier for everyone else in my life too!

I’m planning on making a shared digital calendar with my family/boyfriend, also keeping it on my phone rather than on paper as I know plans can change and this will make it easier to amend.

Start freelancing?!

I actually wasn’t sure whether to include this or not as it’s still a bit of a vague goal for me.

I’ve done a little bit of freelancing (marketing and graphic design) before for some extra cash and it’s something I would love to do again. It’s rewarding working for yourself and being able to create for other people and, let’s be honest, some extra money wouldn’t go amiss too (horses are expensive!)

I’ve been doing a little bit of branding work in my downtime (yeah I know I don’t have the ability to relax - I am working on that too) and I just need to put myself out there really. So by the start of 2020, I’d really love to have a website and maybe a client or two. Hopefully putting this out into the universe will encourage me to make it happen anyway…

Have fun!

And finally, I want to enjoy myself! I’ve got some fun things planned… meeting my friend’s new baby boy, travelling to Sweden, attending HOYS for the first time…. I’d also love to get a gig in the diary, take my horse to the beach or forest and go to Christmas markets! I know that these last 4 months will just fly by, if the start of the year is anything to go by, and I just really want to be the happiest, best version of myself and make the most of all of my time. ☺️

What at are your goals for the rest of 2019?

and not to scare you, but there’s only 120 days until 2020 😱
